November 11, 1918 was called Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I. In 1919 it was declared a day of mourning for the soldiers killed in the war. In 1954, its name was changed to Veterans Day to honor soldiers killed in all wars. Now it is observed to recognize all those who served in the wars. It is a federal holiday.
